12V lighting problems
The most common sources of problems are: -

  • 12N plug
  • Light Clusters
  • Bulbs

12N plug
This is the first place to start, if the plug hasn't been changed for several years, which is normally the case, check the inside of the plug. If there is rust inside the plug and the earth has either stopped working completely, or even worse has joined with any of the positive connections, then you will never get the lights to work! Change the plug using the directions in your caravan’s handbook and hopefully this will solve all your problems.

Light Clusters
If these are old and rusty then they will need to be replaced. Sometimes cleaning the terminals will solve the problem. Before you do this make sure you disconnect the caravan from the car. If you touch the terminals with a screwdriver or similar, the fuse will blow in the car, causing further and different problems.

Check for breakages of the bulb holders anywhere and also check the electrical terminals for corrosion. The earth connection is the most important. If your lights are doing all sorts of weird and wonderful things then it will be a faulty earth connection. Give it a clean and see what happens.

Bulbs
This is the most obvious thing to check. Sometimes they can look ok but aren't. The only way to really check them is to use a circuit tester and do a continuity test,

Wiring
If it is not one of the above you may have a wiring fault which can be difficult to trace.
